Miriam boarded the airplane. She took her seat in the plush chair that only airplanes have, and carefully fastened her buckle. She watched the practiced flight attendants demonstrate the safety techniques. The thought of jumping out of the airplane window put a pit in her stomach. She looked toward her mother.
“Do these things really happen, Ima?” she asked.
“Sweetie, these demonstrations are just for emergencies. You don’t have to worry about that.”
Miriam breathed a sigh of relief.
Miriam gently touched the delicate piece of jewely in her pocket.
“Ima,” she asked, “What would you do if you found something special and didn’t know who it belonged to?”
“That would depend on what it is, Miriam. Why are you asking?” Ima inquired.
Breathlessly, Miriam took the golden chain out of her pocket.
“I found this on the floor, Ima!” she said. “Do you think… do you think I might be able to keep it?”
