BS”D

Shalom everyone!  Today on JGU, we present to you a gift of legacy.  The lyrical words you see below, and the song you can listen to, is the legacy of Thalia Hakin A”H.  Thalia was a shining light– sweet, bright, passionate about her Judaism, and eager to share it… But perhaps her rich personality cannot be adequately captured in words.

Tragically, her Neshama was called home by Hashem in a horrendous accident that cased many unfortunate casualties, at the tender age of 10 years.  Her community in Melbourne Australia, her home, and a great multitude of Klal Yisrael, were, and still are, enveloped and united in shock and pain over the loss of this precious girl.

But neither time nor the challenge will ever dim or extinguish her light.  Words from the heart are incredibly powerful, and build in such an indescribable way– and Thalia’s poem about Shabbos candle-lighting, which she entered at age 9 into the Jewish Girls Unite One More Light Writing Contest, has built for us a vision of hope.  With her song, she has fortified the message that with our efforts, even when we just “light up a candle” we can lift the world, and bring the Redemption.

The essence of Thalia Hakin, Sarah bas Mazal, is invested in her poem, and through her profound message she is immortalized.  This young girl has touched countless hearts, souls, and minds, and still continues to do so.  We miss her greatly…  Yet, she is not gone.  The life and merits of one who has passed on, it has been taught, uplift the world on a greater level than ever possible to achieve in this life.  Read on, and please also enjoy the recording below…  and listen to Thalia’s call.  Internalize her hopeful and loving lesson.  Let’s remember Thalia together, smile as we reflect on her simcha and vivacity…  and sing her song.

I will here take the opportunity to give a big thank you to Rivka Leah, our beloved singer and songwriter, for skillfully setting Thalia’s poem to music in a heartening composition, and Mr. Sam Glaser for all of his help in mixing and editing.

Light Up a Candle

Produced by Jewish Girls Unite
Lyrics: Thalia Hakin o’bm
Melody: Rivkah Leah Cylich-Popack
Music: Sung and arranged by Sam Glaser

When you light up a candle
You light up your Neshama
You light up the world
And when you light up the world
You make it a better place
Like for you, me and everybody
Now the world, the world is dark
But soon it will be bright for us
Imyirtz Hashem Moshiach will come
Now the world, the world is dark
But soon it will be bright for us
Imyirtz Hashem Moshiach will come
When you light up a candle
You light up your Neshama
You light up the world
And when you light up the world
You make it a better place
Like for you, me and everybody
Now the world, the world is dark
But soon it will be bright for us
Imyirtz Hashem Moshiach will come
Now the world, the world is dark
But soon it will be bright for us
Imyirtz Hashem Moshiach will come

Light light up light up the world
Light light up light up a candle
Light light up light up the world
Light light up light up a candle

Light light up light up a candle
Light light up light up the world
We’re lighting a candle
Lighting our neshamas
We’re lighting up the world
And when we light up the world
We make it a better place
For you, me and everybody
We’re lighting a candle…

Light light up light up, light up the world
