Hey everyone! Sorry about the break in writing this blog; lots of tests now!
Ok, I’m going to give you three guesses for something exciting that’s coming up. If you don’t manage I’ll give you three options to choose from. The options are:
1. My birthday
2. I won the lottery
3. Chanukkah.
Did you guess? I really hope you did, because it’s a pretty hard question…
Anyway, yes, Chanukkah is coming up in exactly two days! Yay!
Usually my grandparents from Australia come and visit during Chanukkah, and this year of course, they won’t be. I’m not so happy about that but I’ll try and make do.
Chanukkah is probably the least healthy holiday of the whole year. If you want to eat healthier but want to have one day off, Chanukkah would probably be the day to choose. Most people who have diets or are very healthy “cheat” during Chanukkah. Because Chanukkah is well, Chanukkah! Latkes, donuts, oil, delicious dairy- need I say more?
BUT, I have a suggestion for you. If you got into a good habit of eating healthily and feel that if you break it on Chanukkah it’ll all go down the drain, all you have to is substitute.
What do I mean by that?
Not all oils are unhealthy. Olive oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, avocado oil- they are all great sources of heathy fat. (They actually lower cholesterol- the bad fats.) And healthy fatty foods include nuts, avocadoes, coconuts and more. But I’m getting carried away here. What I want to say is, that you can substitute a less healthy oil like canola oil, for a healthier oil, like olive oil. (Okay, I’m not saying that you have to put olive oil in your donuts…)
Same with other foods. Latkes for example. You can to your latkes sweet potatoes, zucchini, carrot, beets, kohlrabi instead or as well as the regular potatoes. Don’t be afraid to try a new combination! You might be surprised to find kohlrabi latkes your new favorite!
You can always substitute- don’t be afraid to try!! If you’re not sure if to substitute or not, ask your mother what she thinks.
I wish you all a happy, healthy and delicious and nutritious Chanukkah!
Maital
P.s.- Of course you can treat yourself one day to a loaded donut filled with caramel and topped with icing and sprinkles, it’ll be your Chanukkah treat; you deserve it! And don’t worry, I’m not telling!
